But I have some thoug... This is such a tragic story. But I have some thoughts about it:
First, it strikes me that (and I wonder) if the accidental poisoning of animals was related to your' mom's guilt over losing Alice Marie? Maybe it was an unconscious desire to kill everything innocent because a) she didn't deserve anything that might forgive, forget, and love (which included you) and b) and maybe that “atonement” would somehow bring her back, or at least win her forgiveness. Reminds me of a Catholic flagellating herself while praying to an angel.
Feeling "invisible" could also mean you were in the way of that. She pushed you aside because of your innocence and forgiving her. Nothing is more hurtful (and shaming) to a child than to be physically “pushed aside” – something you never forgot. It happened when mom was being taken away (pregnant) on a gurney.
Lastly, you lost your “Rosebud” (red wagon). It was the only thing that ever gave Kane joy in his life. "I never trusted dad again," you said. -- Kane never trusted anyone again. Not that your mother was this way, but do you remember Kane's mother (Agnes Morehead) - a cold, unlovable woman.
Thanks for sharing this, Marti. .
